EMOTIONAL TRANSACTIONS: MUMBLECORE/MUNDANITY

This trifold and video are two parts in a growing study of affectual play, incorporating authorship, research, and the transformation of feeling through design.

For my three color Risograph trifold, I focused on mumblecore films and through research, focused the content of my trifold around how this genre of filmmaking meditated on space and dialogue to reveal the failure of verbalized communication. This trifold presented a challenge in how to frame the content around feeling, showing not telling the viewer how space and dialogue were operating in mumblecore films. The relationship between the typographic treatment and the two apartment images allowed for the relationship between space and dialogue to come to the forefront through contrast and juxtaposition to show the failure of verbalized communication.

My short video began through the gathering of 10 second clips of everyday life. After gathering the clips, I played with ways to express a shift in feeling. Through this process of play I meditated on the fact that we often feel untethered to the mundane scenes of everyday life, ultimately deciding to shift these brief scenes into vignettes of surrealist dreams. The aim of these vignettes was to capture what these scenes were not showing, the separateness of one’s self towards the monotony and mundanity of everyday life. This disparate feeling was captured through narrative assemblage, layering related and unrelated scenes together to create contrast and juxtaposition.
